Description:
Compressed archive containing one or more files that have been compressed using the bzip2 compression algorithm; typically reduced to 10-15% of the original file size; bzip2 is a standard file compression program included with many Unix/Linux distributions.
Technical Details:
Created by Bzip for archival purposes, the BZIP2 file extension is used for compressing data used with applications. Compression files are extremely popular because a large file can be condensed into a smaller file or files to transport. If the file in its original size was downloaded it would take too long so software developer commonly create their own algorithm and version of a compression file as a solution to this. For the BZIP2 files, the compression rate is 10-15%. Although compression file types are popular, the BZIP2 file is not as popular as other similar type file extensions. However, it is a common file extension used with Unix/Linux sharing. Another benefit to using these files type is it frees up disk space so there is more space on the disk if you have compressed data.
