 The GZIP file is popular and is an open source compression designed to bypass the proprietary algorithms associated with most compression file. It is created to free up disk space using the algorithm for Gnu compression. It is included with many UNIX systems. GZIP produces the more popularly known .GZ file extension. Still used for the same purpose. Each software developer creates his or her on proprietary compression algorithm for the sole purpose of saving disk space by condensing a larger file to a smaller file. This allows for faster download and installation. However, an open source compressor eliminates the need to purchase a copy written one.
